Caring for Dental Implants
Avoid eating food until the local anesthetic has worn off and take care to only have cold drinks. Avoid hot food or hot drinks for the first day and do not swill liquid over the Implant area. Try not to disturb the area with your fingers or tongue. Do not participate in strenuous exercise for the first 48 hours.
Try to avoid brushing the surgical area for the first few days, then begin by careful cleaning of the implant area with a toothbrush as well, once tenderness permits. A cup of hot water with a teaspoon of salt are very beneficial for healing the implant in the beginning days but it may taste awful.
Dental implants are made from synthetic materials. Caring for dental implants can be similar to caring for your natural teeth. Regular brushing, flossing and maintaining routine cleanings and dental check-ups as scheduled can help protect implanted tooth. Additional cleaning may also be recommended to help you to keep your teeth healthy.
As is the case with natural teeth, you must work as a team with our dentist to ensure the longevity of your dental implant. While replaced teeth can't get cavities, they are subjected to the same wear and tear as natural teeth. Well placed and cared dental implants can have the potential to last a lifetime.
Following your treatment, recall evaluations, routine maintenance and X-rays will be necessary to ensure the long life of your Implants. To help the patient to protect their implant, patients should be aware of some of the key points on selecting safe home-care products. First products like toothpaste or gel needs to be less abrasive and should not scratch any exposed surfaces of the implant. Avoid dentifrice with fluoride, sodium fluoride, baking soda, stain removers, and smoker's toothpaste.
Bacteria and Plaque that form around an implant can cause inflammation and lead to peri-implant diseases, such as peri-implantitis similar to periodontitis and peri-implant mucositis similar to gingivitis. Regular cleaning of all the surfaces above and below the gum line may help in preventing peri-implant disease.
You are advised not to smoke during treatment and also until the wound has healed as this severely limits healing in the mouth. We want you to recover as smooth and pleasant as possible. It is necessary to follow these instructions carefully. If you have any questions regarding the progress of your treatment, please do not hesitate to contact us.
