Titanium - Why is it suitable for Dental Implants?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root, which is replaced in the jawbone after tooth loss. The aim of placement of dental implants is to achieve osseointegration or bio-integration of the bone with the implant.

Dental implants of the yesteryears

Dental implants used in the earlier generation included subperiosteal, endosseous blade implants and mandibular transosseous, which were made of various materials, including artificial sapphire. As of now, both two-piece screw type implant and single piece implants are currently made of titanium and titanium alloy, which are specially treated. Osseointegration refers to the direct functional and structural connection between the living bone and implant body.

The implanted tooth consists of two parts, the first being a root which is anchored to the jaw bone and the second part is called a dental crown which is in shape of a tooth. The first part of the dental implant which is anchored in the jaw bone is made up of titanium and it will be in shape of the screw between 8 and 16 mm long.

Why Titanium?

Titanium is commonly used as an implant material because it has high bonding ability and biocompatibility with the bone. Titanium which is used in dental implants has the following properties

  • Toughness
  • Stiffness
  • Low density and Good corrosion resistance provided by various titanium alloys at very low elevated temperatures
  • It is light weight metal which does not react to any chemical

An advantageous fact about this implant is, it combines easily with the jaw bone and also has the capacity of being a metal that is compatible with bones and oral tissues.

Titanium roots are stronger and more fracture resistant compared to other types. Titanium has been selected a metal of choice in the dentistry due to its total resistance to attack by body fluids, low modulus and high strength.

Role of Titanium as Dental Implant

The process of fixing implant is done in two phases. In the first phase, the root or titanium piece is anchored into the jaw bone and then it is allowed to combine and heal with the real bone and the bone is allowed to grow over the root.

Titanium plays the vital role of a good base for the dental crown which is in shape of a tooth and looks exactly like the natural teeth in the array. During the healing period where the implant is left to heal, our dentist will fix a temporary crown over it for stability and a permanent crown will be placed once the root gains stability.

Some of the Benefits of Titanium Dental Implants are
  • Titanium dental implants are attractive
  • They are long lasting, which means that they can last for many years
  • They do not decay and are not affected by oral acidity
  • They can support dental crowns and give a natural look
  • Other teeth will not be affected by the placement of implants, and they can protect your other teeth from tooth-loss related damage
